Center for Equity Promotion
Centro para la Promoción de la Equidad
Our Goals
The Center for Equity Promotion (CEQP) is part of the College of Education at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. CEQP is dedicated to working with communities to better understand and support the positive development of children and families, particularly those who are underserved by education, health, and social service systems. We focus on populations that bear the greatest burden of health and education disparities related to adverse social and economic conditions. Our research informs culturally-specific prevention, intervention, and policy efforts that build on community strengths. Our aim is to improve the ability of education, health, and social services delivery systems to respond to the needs of underserved communities.
Focusing on supporting underserved communities and promoting access and involvement to eliminate opportunity gaps
Health
Prioritizing preventative care, participant empowerment, access to services, and honoring culturally-specific health care practices
Community
Utilizing the assets of communities to enhance our participatory, community-based approach to research and intervention.
Research to Practice
Promoting healthy outcomes for individuals and families through integration of the best available research evidence with practitioner expertise and considering the needs of those who will be affected.
What Is Equity
Equity is the fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement of all people. Equity also involves identifying and eliminating barriers that prevent the full participation in society of some individuals and groups.
Equity can be measured as disparities between distinct social groups on the basis of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identification, national origin, ability, immigration status, etc., in regards to:
-
access to resources, information, services, and opportunity;
-
the quality of social experiences (e.g., freedom from discrimination, being a target of exclusionary practices); and
-
outcomes in relation to educational, social, psychological, economic, and other metrics.
CEQP is dedicated to using effective tools to assess equity (e.g., equity scans, data analyses, surveys and interviews) and to address institutional inequities through promoting policies and practices that grant equal access, inclusive engagement, and positive outcomes for diverse communities. We also realize that to catalyze the most effective change, local histories and present-day stakeholders (e.g., families, school leaders and staff, and community, tribal, and institutional leaders and members) must be engaged to define the challenges and the solutions. In these ways, the promotion of equity is simultaneously structural, institutional, and personal.
